Bishop Brown Addresses the UK Riots 2011Posted by Administrator on 12/09/2011 14:19:02 WE NEED TO ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSE, SAYS ADMINISTRATIVE BISHOP
Christian leaders across the UK are in the spotlight as the focus of post-riot discussions move from retribution to restoration.
Following on from David Cameron's recent comments on the 'slow-motion moral collapse' in society, faith leaders are being called upon to help rebuild communities - with a particular emphasis on addressing the root causes of societal breakdown through broken family units and a lack of strong role models.
While the Prime Minister has spoken candidly about politicians' reluctance to speak openly about what is 'right and wrong' in the aftermath of the riots, many church leaders have firmly distanced themselves from simplifying the debate.
Bishop Dr. Eric Brown, National Overseer of the New Testament Church of God said, "Something must be fundamentally wrong with a society when its citizens wilfully bomb, loot and burn with scant regard to the life and well-being of others.
It is a fallacy to think that these problems can be fixed by punitive measures alone. The Government's immediate priority now is to consider the social, political, economic and religious reasons behind the disturbances, and the Church must work with the Government in order to shape policies for the future."
